News Bites | A few facts about mutual fund advertising

August 16, 2011

News Bites is an occasional column in NICSA News that collects memorable facts, quotes and insights from our recent reading.

This edition of News Bites looks at U.S. Government Accountability Office’s report Mutual Fund Advertising, which was released last month. The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Protection instructed the GAO to complete this review. The full report is available on the GAO website.

Here are the conclusions that jumped out at us:

1. Mutual fund advertising is already heavily regulated.

2. Ads focused on performance represent only a small proportion of all mutual fund ads.

3. Investors don’t seem concerned with mutual fund ads.

Our summary of the report’s findings follows. Click on the image to enlarge it.
